Ep. 33. Why do we experience emotions?
This week has been quite a heavy week for me. Not only what happened around the world during the weekend, but somehow many of my clients are dealing with divorce crisis. (We all know what a emotional rollercoaster it could be, right?) So I thought it may be adequate for me to talk about why we experience emotions.
Long time ago, my higher spirit once told me that the highest goal of spirit is to become a human who is not limited by time and space. At that time, I was very puzzled by such a concept. I was probably like majority of people out there, believing being human is such a hard job and why would any spirit want to become a human at all? But my higher spirit answered, “because human is the only form that could feel the most. You sense, feel and have emotions. That’s something that spirit don’t have.”
His words did make me think. I started to evaluate how much we human feel and sense that we take it all for granted. And I started to realize that he is right. Even when I was recalling the memories of my favorite stuffed cat when I was kid, I can still feel the texture on my fingertip as if I were touching the stuffed cat right now. When I recalled the memory of walking on a beautiful field from one of my previous life, I could still smell the freshness in the air. I could hug my children and feel the warmth in between us. I could go for a walk and smell the richness in the fall season. There were so many feelings and sensations that I bypassed everyday that I didn’t even notice it. It was then, I felt grateful to be a human right here and right now because I can feel.
Human or any living things often come with a pack of emotions. It helps us to figure what we like and dislike, what make us happy or sad. When dealing with anger and frustration, there is often a lesson to be learned or a task to be worked on. The craving for joy and happiness thrive us to better ourselves so we could prolong the feeling. We experience sadness, so we can truly celebrate our happiness. I then discovered emotions are there to guide us, not to decide our life for us. They are tools to keep us on the right track, not there to define who we are. It is through our emotions that we slowly figure out who we are and what we want to be.
Emotions cannot label you. For many who stuck in sadness often believe this is it, that sadness is going to be the life they are going to live in. But emotions do not have any power unless you hand the power over to it. They are supposed to be tools we use to guide us and lead us toward our goal and achieve what this soul is born to achieve. We come with a pack of emotions so we can use it to celebrate life, not to be trapped by it. If we are dealing with the low right now, at least undestand that the greatness is coming. Because that’s how the universe keep its balance. All that emoitons is a part of human and what make us special. So we shall embrace it no matter good or bad, high or low, but should not be defined by it.
It is through experiencing emotions, we slowly discover who we truly are. Because the simply truth is that if I have nothing to work on, I will be emotionless. I will not understand the taste of victory, nor would I be able to experience life. Emotions are there for a reason no matter good or bad. if you are dealing with sadness right now, don’t buy into the story that this is what you are going to be from now on. If that sadness is linger on from your childhood, don’t allow that emotions to claim your life and define you. They don’t have the right over you, you OWN the emotions. You decide what emotion you will have and what kind of life you will create for yourself. They are tools, not the label. Take your control back from emotions, and don’t let your emotions have the control over you.
